Homemade Granola

Since the beginning of the new year, I have been cooking up a storm. I suppose that is not too unusual as I am the one primarily whipping things up, or planning ahead for the busy work week. As any parent, we all know that when you walk through the door, you pretty much have noisy kids begging to eat dinner. It’s often difficult to accommodate them, and often times we will throw a cheese stick and some crackers on a plate and have them feast on that until dinner is ready. This also does not always occur at dinner time. We wake up with hungry kids, and have snacky eaters on the weekend. This is why I came up with this granola recipe. It’s a healthy one, and it cures most all hunger, any time of the day, including mine.

Homemade Granola Recipe

This recipe is really easy to throw together, bakes in no time, and lasts throughout the entire week. Let’s get started. Ingredients:

  • 3 cups of thick rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups of sweetened coconut flakes
  • 4 oz sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup of dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup of maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup wheat germ, lightly toasted in dry skillet
  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 egg white, beaten
  • 1/2 cup of dried cherries
  • 1/2 cup of dried blueberries

How to make homemade granola

Mix everything but the dried berries into a mixing bowl, and make sure everything is nicely combined.

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees, and layer the granola mixture onto a parchment lined baking sheet, or use your Silpat if you have one. This ensures a more even baking process in my opinion. Bake for about 45 minutes, taking the granola out of the oven half way through to gently stir, evening it out before placing back into the oven.

Take a peak 45 minutes into the baking process and make sure it is nice and toasted.

Pour the mixture into a mixing bowl, add in the berries, and give it a good mix.

Store the granola into an airtight container. This should last you a good week or so, if it lasts that long.

This granola is not too sweet, and has all of those wonderful flavors and textures you expect in a great granola. Hope you enjoy.

We really love our gronolas around these parts. Thanks for this lovely simple recipe! I tend to use honey as a our sweetener of choice because it’s more widely available.
