Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin SeedsOur season just passed yesterday with kids all dressed up, saying nothing, but wanting my candy. Where did these kids learn that by not saying Trick or Treat, will only get you a stare by me? Seriously kids, candy is just not given out freely at the Phillips’ house without saying “Trick or Treat!”. This time of year brings about the pumpkins that we go and pick from the apple orchard (The Elegant Farmer). Mom typically spends a quarter of her afternoon, so patiently drawing designs, and assisting the kids in carving their pumpkins, however before one can carve the pumpkins, the seeds and other mushy stuff needs to be removed. This freaks the kids out, for whatever reason, I have no idea, as they typically love to play with slime products!

Ingredients:

  • 5 pumpkins, seeds cleaned from pulp, dried
  • 1 stick of butter, melted
  • 1 tsp celery salt
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Pumpkin SeedsOnce the kids put the masses of slime and seeds into large bowls, it is my job to get the seeds removed from the inside of the pumpkin. This is no easy task, however I do find that after an initial removal of the flesh, that it is best to add water to the bowl, swish it around, and remove the pulp from the bowl. Once you have the pulp removed, strain the water, and let the seeds dry, overnight, on a large baking sheet.

The next day, melt the butter, add in the seasoning and worcestershire sauce, and mix thoroughly with the seeds and place back onto the baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 275 degrees and cook for roughly two hours. Let cool, and enjoy. Trust me, these are a must make during the Trick or Treat season!
