Waffle Iron Ham and Cheese Sandwich
I was in the mood to do something fun this past weekend, and when I mean fun, I mean something to make with the waffle iron.  By  now you probably know that I make some fairly crazy stuff from time to time. Things like waffle nachos, even ham and cheese waffles, and even bacon stuffed waffles. So this time around I was not going to make waffles, but something other using the waffle iron as my heat source. As I rummaged through our pantry, I decided to use up some cheap burger buns, along with some ham, and then some cheese, and to add a bit more flavor, a bit of thinly sliced onion. Was this good? Heck yes, it was great and had a crunch, along with nicely melted cheese to boot.
Let’s get started.
Ingredients:
- 4Â cheap hamburger buns
- 6 thinly sliced pieces of deli ham
- 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup of onion, thinly sliced
- Cooking spray
- Waffle Iron
Start by heating your waffle iron on medium heat. Once it comes up to temperature, open the waffle iron and begin spraying both sides of your waffle iron with cooking spray.
Add the bottoms of each of the four buns to the bottom of the waffle iron. Top with half of the cheese, then the ham, then the onions, and the remaining cheese. Top with the remaining top buns, and gently press down on your waffle iron, locking it into place.
Turn, and cook for a few minutes. You can see that mine went a bit longer, which was fine, and had some darker marks. So keep an eye on it.
When you are ready, carefully remove the ham and cheese sandwich from the waffle iron, and slice and serve.
The result is pretty darn delicious. As you can see, it’s a ham and cheese waffle sandwich. The cool thing about this is the cheese oozed out when cooking and left this awesome crispy cheese ring around the sandwich. That in itself was awesome.
As I was about to come up with another idea the following day, my waffle iron decided to fall apart on me. Oh well, I have another one ordered and on its way. Can’t wait to come up with more interesting concoctions. Have you tried making sandwiches in your waffle iron?
